In 2014, the 100kg iron “Welcome” gate was stolen from the Dachau concentration camp. A local blacksmith forged a replica, exactly like the original — almost. Over three days, Rachel Mars invited audiences to the Lyceum Workshop in Roseburn to bear witness as she welded together another copy.
Presented by Horizon Showcase, this impactful, durational performance installation, with live welding and an atmospheric sound-world by Dinah Mullen, explored who memorials are for and who makes this decision. Audiences were invited to watch, sit, and be immersed in the durational installation.
As part of the installation, EAF also hosted a public talk with Rachel Mars and a panel of guest speakers. The conversation explored memorial, public space, and architecture in Edinburgh and across the UK.
