Sarah Schulman: The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity

Augustine United Church event

12th April 26

What is solidarity? And how can solidarity effectively challenge the status quo?

Join acclaimed writer, activist and historian Sarah Schulman for a Q&A to celebrate her latest book, The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity. Reflecting on her own experiences as a queer artist as well as wider political movements – such as current protests organising against Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people and New York City’s AIDS activism in the 1990s – Schulman considers how true collaboration may help us move closer towards justice.

Reckoning with the successes and failures of these movements, she argues that action always comes at a cost, despite not always being effective. But without solidarity we are stuck with the status quo, and we lose any hope of progressive change. By turns challenging, inspiring, pragmatic, and poetic, The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity provides a much-needed path for how we can work together towards
justice now and for the future.

Sarah Schulman is a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, nonfiction writer, and AIDS historian. Her books include The Gentrification of the Mind and Conflict Is Not Abuse. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, New York, Harper’s Magazine, The Atlantic, The Nation, The New Republic, The New York Times, and The Guardian.

The conversation will be chaired by Brooke Hailey Hoffert (they/them). Brooke is a curator, writer and researcher based in Glasgow. They are a PhD researcher at the Glasgow School of Art where they explore queer and trans history, curatorial practice, temporality, and potentiality.

In collaboration with Peninsula Press, Sliver, Outburst Arts, Glasgow Women’s Library, Lavender Menace Queer Books Archive, Lighthouse Books, and London Review of Books.
