Informed by his explorations of National Museums Scotland’s African collection, Okolo is part of Scottish-Nigerian artist and printmaker Nkem Okwechime’s research into his alter ego, a character shaped by the intersection of European and West African cultural influences.
This installation features hand-printed wallpaper and ceramic tiles co-created with community groups for whom National Museums’ African collection has special significance.
Inviting visitors to explore traditional cultural backgrounds, the artwork examines African identity through the lens of contemporary art, using both the collection and individual identities as inspiration.
