PAST EVENT: This was part of the EAF25 programme.
As part of Guy Oliver’s EAF25 exhibition, Millenial Prayer, Jupiter Artland invited visitors to join the artist Guy Oliver and guests for an intimate, youth-led conversation exploring how masculinity is shaped by media, challenged by queerness, and reimagined through art.
Set in the dreamlike surroundings of Jupiter Artland, this event invited open dialogue around identity, performance, and expression — with screenings, discussion, and shared food. The talk shared bold ideas, humour, and room to rethink the roles we’ve inherited. Oliver was joined by Kimi Zarate-Smith, writer and former Editor-in-Chief of Era Journal, and Peter Meades, an author and UKCP-registered integrative psychotherapist, in a conversation chaired by Emily Steer.
Guy Oliver’s interdisciplinary practice employs video alongside text, painting, collage, and performance. Oliver has a long-standing interest in issues around male identity, notions of failure and the concept of the tragicomic. His work deftly weaves together references from social and cultural histories, music, advertising, and internet subcultures, embodied through a cast of characters and personas. These devices are used to address uncomfortable, complex, and urgent subject matter. Alongside Oliver’s dark humour and cutting critique, viewers will find an astute and sensitive portrayal of fragility and vulnerability.
