Union Canal

Join Chris O’Connell, Scottish Canals’ Heritage Manager, as he discusses the history of the Union Canal, from its inception to modern times. This talk will also provide a look forward to how Scottish Canals are adapting to climate change. This sailing aboard the Lochrin Belle will take us from Leamington Lift Bridge to Slateford and back. Select hot and cold drinks will be available onboard. Please arrive 10 minutes before departure.

Chris O’Connell studied archaeology at Durham University and Cognitive Evolution and archaeology at Reading University. After university Chris worked as a consulting archaeologist for an Edinburgh based company. Chris was seconded to Scottish Canals in 2011 for two years and subsequently has been a full-time employee for the canals. As Heritage Manager, Chris works with Local Authorities and HES to ensure work undertaken on the canal is sensitive and appropriate to the heritage of the canals as Scheduled Monuments. His particular focus is the susceptibility of historic assets to climate change.

The Lochrin Belle is wheelchair accessible, but space is limited. Please contact us with any access requirements or queries in advance of your booking date by emailing or calling 0131 226 6558.
