Refractions: New Conceptions of Film + Photography

15th January 25 - 18th March 25

Refractions: New Conceptions of Film + Photography (15 January—18 March) is a free programme of events co-created by Rhubaba and the EAF Civic Programme. The programme aims to connect marginalised people with creativity through film, theatre, photography, ceramics, writing, and more.

Join us for workshops exploring creativity across mediums: create experimental theatre, document a nature walk through photography, wield collective art criticism, or shape clay in response to sensual film. The workshops are led by an exceptional collection of local creatives, with care at the core. The programme will close with an evening of shared queer joy in a short film screening in collaboration with SQIFF (Scottish Queer International Film Festival).

Attend one event, or one of everything — each event is ticketed separately, with limited capacity for workshops, so book well in advance to avoid disappointment. All events are free, with an optional donation which will feed back into the Rhubaba x EAF Civic programme.

About Rhubaba

Rhubaba is an artist-run initiative producing development programmes and curating a wider public programme of events and exhibitions for emerging artists in Edinburgh and beyond. Rhubaba addresses the barriers facing emerging artists and strives to support and affirm their creative practices with full care, fostering deep relations to uplift artists effectively.

At Rhubaba’s core is the belief that artists of colour deserve to experience joy. They work towards an ecology of reciprocity, to leave a world better than the one they entered.

About EAF Civic

The EAF Civic Programme is a year-round collaboration with artists, individuals and communities who are finding alternative ways to resist through the arts. These projects aim to innovate safer, more accessible, and engaging festival programming during periods of social change, and to centre the voices of those who have historically been excluded from public spaces and the creative sectors.

Civic practice provides the space, time and resources for longer-term creative collaborations and co-curated opportunities. The programme is built on care, growth, trust-building and new possibilities between EAF and the community organisations, artists, and charities we partner with.
