PAST EVENT: This was part of our 2024 programme
JUPITER RISING is Scotland’s artist-driven art and music festival set in the iconic landscape of Jupiter Artland. For 2024, Jupiter Rising partnered with EAF to throw a one-night only party. JUPITER RISING x EAF invited audiences to explore, discover and celebrate underrepresented artistic voices, championing queer and QTIPOC experimental practice. The event included unique site-responsive performance, plus the return of the infamous late night stage, showcasing progressive club nights with the best of Scottish and international DJs.
JR 2024’s theme was Queer Summer Fête: experimental Best In Show, acid-bright bunting, gay-pole dancing, and the notorious Boob Bar serving drinks all night.
The line-up featured:
CONVERSATION with GEMMA ROLLS-BENTLEY: Curator and writer Gemma Rolls-Bentley celebrates the Scottish launch of her latest book: Queer Art: From Canvas To Club, And The Spaces Between, spotlighting the artists who captured queer history, from the Stonewall uprising to the first pride parades, to the rise of drag and the fight for trans liberation. Gemma Rolls-Bentley was in conversation with EAF24 artist Prem Sahib.
LATE NIGHT STAGE from FEMMERGY: Dance the night away at our infamous late-night stage, curated by intersectional Edinburgh-based club night collective Femmergy – with queer club night favourites Groundskeeper Fanny and Danyo leading the lineup.
PERFORMANCE from EBUN SODIPO: Artist Ebun Sodipo brought a performance from a practice guided by black feminist study to locate and produce real and imaginable narratives of black trans women’s presence, embodiment, and interiority across the past, present, and future.
MUSIC from ICEBOY VIOLET: Music from Iceboy Violet, who draws from raw experimental club music, tinges of warped pop abstraction, rap and performance art.
POETRY from WATERWINGS: Glasgow reading series Waterwings will host Jupiter Rising x EAF’s new poetry garden, with readings in the Ballroom Garden from Julia Gilmour and Colin Herd.
DESIGN from JOSIE KO: JUPITER RISING featured stage design from artist Josie KO, who used untraditional methods and mediums to produce beautiful sculptural works that counteract erasure and celebrate joy and the handmade.
DJ SET from PLANTAINCHIPPS: Glasgow-based DJ Plantainchipps brought upbeat and fast-paced sounds to uplift and excite, ranging through Afrobeats, House and Dancehall.
PERFORMANCE from ALIMA ASKEW: Edinburgh-based artist Alima Askew, explored the uncanniness of folklore, personal mythologies and the supernatural in the everyday, presented a performance weaving through Jupiter Artland’s iconic landscape.
KARAOKE from SGÀIREOKE: Iconic Glasgow-based performance artist Sgàire Wood returned for crowd favourite Sgàireoke, combining queer performance with music and karaoke from the audience.
TAROT from TARA MCGILVRAY-GUARD: Tarot reader and director of the witch shop Wheel of Fate in Edinburgh Tara McGilvray-Guard offered short in-person tarot readings throughout the night.
