The first exhibition in Europe from Los Angeles-based painter Hayler Barker. Her nuanced landscape and still-life paintings strike a seemingly impossible harmony between intimacy and grandeur, appearing simultaneously dense and intricately painted, and yet open and full of space.
Barker’s paintings explore personal histories and the passage of time, sometimes explicitly rendered from life, originating in a specific place or object and yet they seem to come from an interior place, balancing real and imaginary worlds that often suggest a dreamscape as much as a landscape. In this show, the artist celebrates the cycle of the seasons in response to the play of light across the four walls of the main space in the old Glasite Meeting House.
