Collective Memories – Sewing with Alaya Ang

This workshop brought together members of the SCORE Scotland Women’s Group to respond directly within Alaya Ang’s exhibition The Fingers Pulling The Thread. Working alongside the artist, participants physically intervened in the installation by sewing into the existing textile work, temporarily adding a new layers to the exhibition through collective making. They discussed sewing as a method of care, repair, and inscription, with. each stitch acting as a gesture of response – layering personal experience, memory, and time onto the installation.

About the Exhibition

The Fingers Pulling The Thread is a floor-based multimedia installation by Singaporean artist Alaya Ang, featuring hand-dyed textiles produced in Indonesia and Scotland. The work meditates on textile craft, lineage, and creative labour, foregrounding the hands and histories embedded within cloth. Moving across geographies and generations, the installation explores how personal and collective memories are woven into what we wear.

This work was part of the 10th Year of PLATFORM, this annual group exhibition is designed to provide a dedicated platform for early-career artists based in Scotland and working in the field of contemporary art within EAF’s programme.
